If our life is poured out in useless words,
we will never hear anything,
will never become anything,
and in the end,
because we have said everything before we had anything to say,
we shall be left speechless at the moment of our greatest decision.
— Thomas Merton, Thoughts in Solitude, p.90
wow…I suppose it is only fair for you to mess with me after I messed with you with that Dorothy Day quote, but, really!
You know, I “preached” pretty much every week for 25 years, “saying everything before I had anything to say”, and now…?
Well, actually I started to have “something” to say a few years ago, but then I discovered very few wanted to listen to me anymore. curious, but ok, because by then I was mostly just doing it and not saying much at all anymore.
So true.
One of my recent favorite expressions is (spoken in a kind of sigh) “aghhh words…words…” then silence.
People look at me odd…but that is ok.
BTW – I still talk way too much!
